Tooth Fillings in Campsie

When tooth decay occurs, the damaged part of the tooth is carefully removed, and the resulting cavity is filled with a restorative material to bring the tooth back to its original shape and function.

What is a filling?

Once decay sets into a tooth, it progressively damages more of the tooth structure, often leading to increased pain if left untreated. To address this, a dentist removes the decayed portion and places a filling, which not only repairs the damage but also prevents bacteria from further compromising the tooth. Fillings are made from various materials, such as composite resin, amalgam, or ceramic, and they can be used to restore any tooth in the mouth.

When are fillings needed?

Most people don’t realize they need a filling until it’s discovered during a routine dental exam and X-rays. Fillings act as a preventative measure, protecting teeth from further decay and potential pain. That’s why regular dental check-ups are essential — they allow dentists to catch problems early and provide timely treatment to keep your teeth healthy.

What filling material do we use?

We use a non-toxic, biocompatible, bonded tooth-colored filling material, carefully matched to blend seamlessly with your natural teeth. For more extensive damage, such as badly chipped or broken teeth, we may recommend porcelain restorations, commonly known as inlays or onlays, for added strength and durability.

Old amalgam fillings. Should I get these removed?

Amalgam (mercury alloy) has been previously used as a filling material. We never use amalgam in any of our procedures. We can safely remove amalgam fillings if necessary. Although, if they aren’t causing you trouble, it is better to leave amalgam fillings alone.

Can I eat or drink after a composite filling?

Patients are often surprised when we say they can eat and drink immediately after a white composite filling. This is possible because the light used to harden the filling makes them ready to use!
